The Palmach Museum

The Palmach Museum is dedicated to the Palmach , a force in the “Hagana”, a secret military agency that was established before Israel became a state to defend the Jewish population. Later the Hagana would become part of the Israeli Defense Forces or their army.

Located in Ramat Aviv ,  Israel, the Palmach Musuem is made to recognize the significance of the Palmach legacy in the building of the Jewish state.  The Palmach Museum opened its doors in 2000 and recognizes what the Palmach did in making Israel a country of its own.  The museum was created by an Israeli architect named Zvi Hecker.

The Palmach Museum is a bit of a different experience for the typical museum goer as it is more of a hearing and seeing experience.  The Palmach museum takes visitors underground and through different parts of the tunnels starting with the memorial for the fallen.  It is meant to teach people about the Palmach and allows you to see their surroundings.

The first part of the tour is a street in Tel Aviv in 1941, one sees what was in the news and learns about World War II at that time.  After that the visitors learn about how and why the Palmach was established which was mainly to deal with the Germans who were invading Africa and also prevent Arabs from hurting Jewish people who lived in Israel.

The second part of the tour takes place in a field with plants where most people would not be able to spy military people.  This part of the tour shows what training was like and how new recruits were taken into the Palmach.  The unit that one watches will be the same unit that  guides you through the rest of the museum.  They explain what type of missions the group did and what life was like for the Palmach members.  There are plenty of biographies of former members and also photos that one can look at, as well.

If  you want to go to this museum make sure to preplan.   You either have to have a group of 25 for a tour or go by yourself and expect to be put in a group of that size.   The tour is appropriate for children from seven to adults of all ages.  There are a variety of languages that one can listen to on the tour.  Prices range from children to adults, find out how much it is when you preplan your visit. Each tour is 90 minutes.
